What should I choose? / What is the difference? In terms of diver training there is very little between PADI and SSI. They both follow the diving standards set by WRSTC (World Recreational Scuba Training Council) meaning that knowledge and skill requirements are almost the same. There are some small differences between these two organizations but at the end of the day, they both offer the highest quality, safe courses and produce proper and capable divers.
PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) www.padi.com is bigger and more famous than SSI (Scuba Schools International) www.divessi.combut it does not mean that PADI is better or more accepted – it is just another organization. Both SSI and PADI are recognized worldwide and every dive centre in the world knows and recognizes both of them.
One great difference in Honduras is that SSI does not require students to buy course materials where PADI does. This saves you money and luggage space and is more environmentaly friendly. You can borrow SSI materials during your course and buy them later if you choose, either here or when you get home.
SSI is also the first training organization to implement a "training plus experience" concept. You can complete the theory components of courses just as quickly as with other organizations but there are certain levels of certification that will require a certain number of dives to be completed before you can recieve your certfication card. This is an amazing philosophy that ensures your dive skills continue to expand with your knowledge.
