Honduras Travel Info

Honduras has much to offer the adventurous spirit. Whether you're looking for world-class rapids, white-sand beaches, quaint colonial villages or an icy mug of micro-brew, the mainland is rife with opportunities for travelers on their way to or from Utila. Below are a few of our top choices for a well-rounded tour of the country. For those on a beeline to our little diving Mecca, we've also included the big-city essentials.

San Pedro Sula

A major airline and bus hub, San Pedro Sula will most likely feature somewhere on your Honduras itinerary. All too often, though, travelers are advised to get in and out of this city as quickly as possible. The truth is, there are certainly none-too-desirable portions of downtown San Pedro but the city's northwest quadrant boasts a lively nightlife scene, numerous restaurant options, and one of the finest craft markets in the country, Mercado Guamilito.

Tamarindo Hostel
This clean, safe backpacker-style lodging is located a few blocks from both the Hedman-Alas bus station and the Mercado Guamilito. Room options vary from air-conditioned dorm rooms ($8 per person) to private rooms ($20 per room). The converted house, decorated with vibrant murals, features a shared kitchen, a comfortable lounge with free Internet and a book exchange, and a garden terrace with hammocks. Host Juan Carlos can direct guests to the city's best eateries and nighttime hot spots.

La Ceiba

The jumping-off point to Utila, this coastal city is often viewed solely from the parameters of a cheap hotel room. And while the downtown area does offer travelers a range of necessary services (laundry, Internet, money exchange...), it doesn't exactly beckon with a vital cultural scene or swaying palms. A nicer option is to stay outside this compact core area, either in Pico Bonito National Park or along a clean stretch of beach to the east or west.

Banana Republic
For those on a quick overnight stay in La Ceiba, this clean - though somewhat institutional - backpacker hostel offers dorms ($5 and $7 per person) and private rooms ($17 per room) a short walk from the MegaPlaza Mall.

Coco Pando
Located in a quiet residential area west of the city and close to the airport, this secluded beachfront hotel boasts spacious, air-conditioned rooms with mini-fridges, hot water, televisions and water coolers ($40-45). The second-story Iguana Bar and Restaurant overlooking the sea serves up generous, tasty dishes (like the Camarones a la Diabla, shrimp in a butter cream sauce with bell and jalapeno peppers). The manager provides airport and bus pickup/drop-off, included in the room rate.

Omega Lodge
Schedule a few days to stay in Pico Bonito National Park along the world-renowned Rio Cangrejal. The Omega Lodge offers a variety of accommodation options, from the double-occupancy "candlelight cabana" ($6) to double rooms in the guest house ($14) and a "creek cabana" situated over a babbling creek ($25, max. 4 people). Their newest addition, the "beauty view cabins" ($50 double, $10 each additional person, max. 5 people) feature private bathrooms, hot water and a view of El Bejuco waterfall. The grounds include a fresh-water pool, a fruit orchard, an iguana breeding house and a charming open-air restaurant. The lodge doubles as a tour operator, offering kayaking and rafting trips along the Class IV and V Cangrejal with its internationally-licensed guides, as well as horseback-riding tours and hiking trips. Tours include a free night in the guest house or a $5 discount off the other lodging options. The owners provide a shuttle service to and from La Ceiba for $12 per carload (max. 4 people).
